Q: What is the working principle of a high-frequency flyback transformer?

A: A high frequency flyback transformer typically features a core with an air gap. The function of the air gap is to store energy. The transformer operates by means of high-frequency switching of the switching transistor. When the switching transistor is turned on, the primary winding stores energy while the secondary winding is cut off, resulting in no output. When the switching transistor is turned off, the stored energy in the primary side is released, the core delivers energy, and the secondary side becomes conductive to supply power to the load. Energy is first stored in the form of magnetic energy and then released, enabling isolated step-down voltage conversion and multiple outputs. As such, the flyback transformer is an energy-storage type isolated switching power supply magnetic component.
