Q: What should be paid attention to in the design of flyback transformers?
A: Core air gap requirement: Due to the single-ended operating mode of the flyback transformer, a substantial DC bias component exists in the magnetic core. An air gap must be introduced to prevent core saturation and ensure reliable operation.
Leakage inductance mitigation: Leakage inductance poses a significant challenge in flyback transformer design, as it gives rise to voltage spikes and electromagnetic interference. To minimize leakage inductance, the interleaved sandwich winding configuration is typically adopted, in which the primary winding is split into two sections and the secondary winding is placed between them, thereby improving magnetic coupling.
Core material selection: To achieve compact size and lightweight construction, flyback transformers generally operate at high frequencies ranging from tens of kilohertz to several hundred kilohertz. Consequently, manganese-zinc ferrite is the preferred core material for such applications.
