A buck inductor, also known as a step-down inductor or Buck inductor, is a type of power inductor specifically designed for DC-DC buck converter circuits. It is constructed using a high-permeability magnetic core (commonly made of ferrite, iron-silicon-aluminum alloy, or metal magnetic alloy) wound with enameled wire or Litz wire. Its core function is to store and release energy based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. Working together with switching transistors, diodes, and other components, the buck inductor efficiently converts a higher input voltage into a lower output voltage required by the device, while suppressing current ripple generated during the step-down process and improving power conversion efficiency. As such, it is an indispensable core power component in power management systems. The core material of the buck inductor is selected flexibly based on specific application scenarios: ferrite cores are suitable for low-to-medium frequency and low-to-medium power applications, offering low cost; iron-silicon-aluminum alloy cores are suitable for medium-to-high power applications, providing high saturation magnetic flux density and low core loss.

Q: What phenomena will inductor saturation cause? How to avoid it?

A: Main phenomena: Sharp drop of inductance value, sharp rise of output ripple, reduced efficiency and severe heating of inductors.

Prevention methods:

• Select inductors with saturation current Isat ≥ 1.2 times the maximum peak current.

• Choose appropriate copper wires according to current to avoid overload operation.

• Adopt forced heat dissipation for inductors, such as installing cooling fans.
